DHAKA: The prime ministers of Pakistan and India opened talks on Sunday on the sidelines of the United Nations, amid calls from New Delhi for greater action against Islamic militants.

Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif, in his first meeting with India since he swept back to power in May elections, and Indian premier Manmohan Singh shook hands as they started talks in a New York hotel, reports The Straits Times.

The meeting comes against the backdrop of India`s growing concern over terror attacks emanating from Pakistan.

The immense political pressure on Dr Singh was evident today when BJP leader Narendra Modi tore into him casting aspersion on his ability to talk tough with Pakistan on terror, says NDTV.
